Saving Lives Through Innovative First Responder Platform

Sora is a startup founded by two board-certified emergency medicine physicians, aiming to revolutionize emergency response effectiveness. Born from its co-founders' insight that it's oftentimes the actions taken on-scene that spell the difference between life and death, Sora harnesses cutting-edge IoT technology to transforms ordinary public spaces into life-saving hubs, equipping and enabling bystanders with the necessary tools to act swiftly in critical situations. This strategy substantially reduces the critical time gap between the onset of an emergency and subsequent interventions, thereby saving lives and lessening the impact of injuries.

Leveraging a rigorous design methodology and our service design toolkit, Loft's designers and engineers immersed themselves in the pain points of all stakeholders to empower confident emergency response.
  • Design Research & Strategy
    The team developed user personas to capture an exhaustive range of needs and clarify the process of assisting victims quickly and effectively. Through research, storytelling, and co-creation techniques, insights revealed three critical User Experience principles to lifeguard, advocate, and steward.
  • Naming & Branding
    Sora's branding avoids intimidating medical cues, using approachable language, soft colors, and clear icons to empower bystanders. The name evokes calm clarity, reinforcing trust, usability, and readiness in emergencies. The strategy intentionally avoids typical emergency colors and conventional medical equipment designs, which can be alienating and intimidating.
  • Industrial Design Development
    Working closely with the Sora team, we built the industrial design details to emphasize clarity, durability, and accessibility with consistent layouts and durable materials. Clean, geometric forms contribute to the system's intuitive nature, while clear labeling with concise titles like "Bleeding," "Allergy," and "Overdose" ensures quick identification in stressful situations.
  • Mechanical Engineering
    Mechanical engineering delivered the intended design to Sora, meeting the target cost and quality for lifesaving impact. Material choices of sheet metal and cardboard balanced cost-effectiveness with the durability needed to withstand environmental stressors in public spaces.
  • UX & Service Design
    Sora's UX and service design simplifies lifesaving action through clear instructions, QR-linked guidance, and intuitive interfaces — empowering diverse users to act confidently and effectively during high-stress emergencies.
  • Dual-Layered Information Strategy
    Each Sora container features a QR code linking to Learn-Ahead instructions, allowing individuals to familiarize themselves with emergency protocols in advance, while Just-In-Time instructions inside the container provide clear, step-by-step guidance for immediate action during emergencies.

The Market Opportunity <color=purple>

Democratizing emergency response by bridging the gap between the proven public AED model and today's most urgent crises

The US is grappling with a health crisis of unprecedented scale: over 81,000 fatalities from opioid overdoses in a recent year, and approximately 60,000 lives claimed annually by traumatic injuries. Despite the widespread availability of over 3 million AEDs for cardiac arrests, there remains a critical shortage of accessible, easy-to-use emergency supplies for managing overdoses and traumatic hemorrhages in public spaces. Sora differentiates itself from traditional, often intimidating medical equipment through its innovative, user-friendly approach. The team secured an NIH SBIR grant, enabling deployment within government institutions and bridging a critical gap between people in urgent need and 911 emergency response services, while scaling into vertical markets including hospital systems, higher education, private high schools, and government agencies.

    A web application pairing lifesaving tools with cellular technology that assures stocked supplies, tracks expiration dates, and reduces labor, cost, and audit-trail challenges.

    Geolocation mapping enables public safety dispatchers to direct callers to the nearest container, providing a support layer to existing emergency protocols.
  • Approachable, Non-Intimidating Design
    A palette of white, navy, and yellow evokes urgency without causing panic, with a clear window on the container to give users a quick look into the setup.

The Sora System offers a well-organized assortment of just-in-time kits equipped to address medical emergencies such as opioid overdoses and traumatic hemorrhages, complemented by training resources categorized by content duration for efficient preparation. Leveraging advanced IoT technology, Sora transforms ordinary spaces into well-equipped lifesaving stations. By adopting a research-driven, human-centric strategy, Sora not only gained substantial market access but also established itself as a design leader in the emergency response space
